Weyerhaeuser harvests about three percent of its own North Carolina timber in an average year, leaving about 97 percent of its forest to continue the 30- to 35-year growing cycle typical of loblolly pine. Timber from Weyerhaeuser's own forest makes up about one third of the raw material needed to furnish mills. Th company purchases the rest from smaller private landowners. Weyerhaeuser always replants more trees than it harvests in North Carolina, usually about four to one.

Trees Planted

Weyerhaeuser grew more than 38 million seedlings in 2000 at the Washington N.C nursery. Most were loblolly pine, but many were hardwood species. A seedling planted by Weyerhaeuser in 2001 will reach maturity in 2036.
