Cool Springs is open year-round. We can only accomodate group sizes up to 60 per day. This is due to only having two instructors on-site (30 per instructor). If your group is larger than that, you will need to schedule multiple days for your visit. There are no fees associated with Cool Springs.
Come prepared to spend the day outdoors. We recommend long pants and substantial shoes suitable for walking long distances through the forest. Dress for the weather. Hats or caps are also recommended during the insect season. We do provide insect repellent, but you may prefer your own brand. Please do not wear sandals, flip-flops, or other open toe type shoes.
During hot weather, coolers of ice water are strategically placed along the trail and we have outdoor porta-johns at the main picnic shelter and the one on the Neuse River. Bringing some sort of snack to eat about halfway along the trail is recommended, as walking on the trail usually coincides with the time many classes would normally be eating lunch. A small snack is usually enough to tide them over until we return to the large shelter for lunch (something carried by the adults, not the children, examples are goldfish crackers, animal crackers, yogurt or chocolate covered raisins or peanuts, etc.).
